Lacanau, the Atlantic metronome
Lacanau-Océan is one of the most consistent spots in the Médoc. Its beach faces dead west and catches every west and northwest swell rolling down out of the Bay of Biscay. It's also, historically, the cradle of Bordeaux surf: the coast's first-ever surf school opened here back in 1968.
Every August the spot hosts the Lacanau Pro, a historic WQS stop. It's the must-do meetup for Paris surfers who drive down for the weekend, and a prime playground for intermediates leveling up.
Reading the North and South banks
Lacanau is built around two main peaks: Plage Nord (right off the seafront promenade) and Plage Sud (300 m away, to the south). Depending on the season and the currents, one fires better than the other.
— Plage Nord is wider, more forgiving, busier with the schools. Solid bank for those leveling up.
— Plage Sud is often hollower, with more organized sets on the good days. For confirmed intermediates and up.
— The banks shift after every storm, so the "best side" keeps changing. Ask the locals in the morning.
The best seasons
Summer (June–August): water at 20–22°C, flat sandbanks, smaller but consistent waves, beach vibes. Absolutely packed.
Autumn (September–November): THE best window. Longer-period swells, steadier winds, the crowd evaporates after September 15, and the water's still 18–19°C through the end of October.
Winter (December–February): big and cold (water at 11–12°C, often strong wind). For the confirmed crew with a 5/4 mm wettie. Way fewer surfers in the lineup.
Logistics and good addresses
Parking: paid in season along the seafront. Free parking 5–10 min on foot in the town-center streets. Don't roll in by car on July 14, August 15, or anytime all summer after 1pm — gridlock.
Legendary schools: Lacanau Surf Club (the oldest, pro-level coaching), Ocean Roots, Lacanau Surf School. All rent gear and run week-long courses.
Good spots: Lacanau market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, La Cabane du Surfeur for a drink with your feet in the sand, Hôtel L'Étoile d'Argent to crash 100 m from the break.
Frequently asked questions
Lacanau or Hossegor for surfing in September?+
If you're after power and barrels: Hossegor (but it's mobbed). If you want a mellower crowd and a more forgiving wave: Lacanau. The two are 2 hours apart by car — some folks hit both in one weekend.
When is the Lacanau Pro?+
Usually between late July and mid-August. The contest (WQS) pulls in hundreds of pro and amateur surfers. If you want to surf the spot, come BEFORE or AFTER the comp: the water's jam-packed for 10 days straight.
Can you surf Lacanau as a beginner?+
Yep, on Plage Nord on small-swell days (≤ 1 m). Plenty of schools running lessons. Steer clear on the big days (≥ 1.5 m) and any zones with current. The lifeguards mark off the patrolled zone every day.
What level for Plage Sud at Lacanau?+
Confirmed intermediate, minimum. The bank gets hollow earlier and the paddle-out can be long on the big days. Not a spot to learn on.
Are there alternatives to Lacanau to dodge the crowd?+
Yes: Le Porge (mellower, forest vibes, 20 min south), Le Grand Crohot (Cap Ferret), Le Pin Sec (Naujac, a secret one). All reachable in under an hour from Lacanau.
