Offshore wind blows from the land out to sea. It meets the face of the incoming wave, holds it up a moment longer and smooths the surface, so waves break cleaner and more predictably. Onshore blows from the sea onto the beach, pushing waves over too early so they crumble into mush on a choppy surface. Cross-shore runs along the beach: bumpy faces and sideways drift. Simple test — face the ocean: wind at your back is offshore, wind in your face is onshore.
Offshore, onshore, cross-shore: what the words mean
These three words say nothing about how strong the wind is. They describe its direction RELATIVE to the beach you're standing on. That's why the same easterly can be perfect at one beach and pointless at the next one along, if they don't face the same way.
- Offshore: blows from the sand out to sea, straight into the oncoming wave.
- Onshore: blows from the sea onto the sand, in the same direction the wave is travelling.
- Cross-shore (also called side-shore): runs parallel to the beach.
The test that never fails: stand facing the ocean. Wind at your back is offshore. Wind in your face is onshore. Wind arriving from your left or right is cross-shore.
Everything in between is a diagonal. Cross-offshore (side-on, but angled out to sea) is usually still very good; cross-onshore is generally the one that makes the wave messiest.
Why a light offshore morning is the classic good session
A breaking wave is water lifting up and then toppling forward. Offshore wind pushes back against that rising face: it holds the wave up a fraction longer, so it stands taller and breaks a little later, usually more cleanly and more consistently. It also combs the surface flat, killing the small chop and producing that smooth, oily look surfers call glassy.
Onshore does the opposite. It shoves the top of the wave from behind, tips it over too soon, and the whole thing collapses into whitewater instead of peeling. A sustained sea breeze also creates its own local wind waves: short, disorganised lumps that chop up the clean groundswell arriving from offshore.
So why the dawn obsession? In settled weather the land cools faster than the ocean overnight, and that cooler inland air drains back towards the coast as a light land breeze — offshore, right at first light. Once the sun heats the sand the circulation reverses and the sea breeze usually fills in through the early afternoon. Hence the early alarm — and hence the crowd on those good mornings, so be patient in the line-up and respect priority.
Strong offshore isn't a gift, especially when you're learning
Offshore gets sold as the holy grail. That's true up to a point: once it goes beyond a light breeze, a hard land wind makes life genuinely harder.
- The wave stands up and breaks later, so the take-off is steeper, later and far less forgiving.
- The wind holds your board back while you paddle: you need more speed and more commitment to get into the wave at all.
- It fires spray straight into your eyes at the exact moment you need to see.
- On a small swell it can stop waves breaking altogether — everything just bulges and rolls through.
There's a real safety side too: offshore wind pushes anything that floats away from the beach. On a foam board, a bodyboard or an inflatable, you drift out fast and the paddle back is much harder than the trip out. Conversely, a light onshore on a clean swell is perfectly surfable — and if you're learning in the whitewater, a bit of texture on the sea has never stopped anyone improving.
How to read wind direction on a forecast
First, the thing that catches everyone out: in meteorology a wind is named after where it COMES FROM. A north-westerly comes from the north-west and heads south-east. App arrows, meanwhile, don't all follow the same convention — some point where the wind is coming from, others where it's going. Check the legend once and you'll never wonder again. Same for units: knots or km/h depending on the site (1 knot ≈ 1.85 km/h).
Then compare that direction with your beach's orientation — the direction it faces. Much of the European Atlantic coast, from the Basque Country up through the Landes, faces roughly west: an easterly is offshore there, a westerly is onshore, and northerlies or southerlies are cross-shore. Bays, headlands and jetties change everything: a bit of land in the right place can block the wind and leave one spot rideable on a day the neighbouring beach is unsurfable.
