South Africa surf forecast

Durban gave South African surfing its oldest professional contest: the Gunston 500, launched in 1969 on the Golden Mile and won six years running by hometown hero Shaun Tomson, crowned world champion in 1977. New Pier and North Beach, where local Jordy Smith learned to surf, still anchor that scene today; the water, kept warm year-round by the Agulhas Current, stays mild (68-75°F / 20-24°C) even through the southern winter, the best swell season (March to September). Our coverage currently focuses on this Durban Golden Mile stretch and KwaZulu-Natal; Cape Town and Jeffreys Bay aren't in the catalogue yet.
